Applied Skills Programme

The Batchwood Centre - Hair and Beauty
(Off-site provider)

The courses offered are suitable for students following a more vocational based curriculum.  They will travel to the specialist faculties available at the Batchwood School where they will study for either VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ) (Current Year 10 students) or BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing Services + VTCT Level 1 Award in Basic Makeup Application (Current Year 11 students) giving them a real working life experience of this industry sector while working towards a recognised qualification(s) that have progression routes beyond Level 2 awards.

VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ)

This qualification has been developed for learners aged 14-16 with an interest in hairdressing and/or beauty therapy. It aims to support young people to:

- develop a broad understanding of the hair and beauty sector

- develop significant knowledge which spans the entire vocational sector and related industries

- develop academic and study skills that will support progression within the hair and beauty sector and more broadly, across the range of sectors.

Learners will gain an understanding of the hair and beauty sector and undertake a research project. They will also have the opportunity to study business enterprise, marketing and promotions in hair and beauty, to look at the science of hair and beauty and to respond to a hair and beauty design brief.

As well as developing knowledge and skills in researching, science, business, marketing and design, learners will develop further skills which will support them into further study, including:

- Critical thinking and being reflective on self-performance and work produced

 - Use of initiative, planning and researching skills, self-management, self-motivation and the ability to work independently

 - Innovation and creativity

 - Application of knowledge and understanding to real life examples and businesses

 - Problem solving

 - Communication skills - verbal, written and visual.

Because of the breadth of this qualification, it will complement a range of both GCSEs and Technical Awards. Maths and English GCSEs fit particularly well as this qualification provides opportunities to apply such knowledge and skills.

VTCT Level 1 Award in Basic Make-Up Application (QCF)

The VTCT Level 1 Award in Basic Make-Up Application (QCF) will enable you to prepare for and carry out basic make-up application, using foundation, concealers, powder, eye products, cheek products and lip products.

You will be able to prepare for make-up, carry out a skin analysis and use consultation techniques. The treatment will also involve checking that the final result is to the satisfaction of the client.

This course is suitable for learners who wish to progress to a make-up course which leads to employment.

BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing Services

This qualification provides learners with a solid foundation in hairdressing services, and is suitable to be taken by learners aged 14 years and older. This is a preparation for work qualification, which develops learners practical capability in skills such as shampooing and conditioning hair, and styling men and women’s hair. Learners will also develop knowledge, understanding and skills in essential areas, including health and safety and working with others. This qualification is part of the Foundation Learning suite, and is supported by Habia, the Standards Setting Body (SSB) for hair and beauty, and is informed by the hairdressing National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Vocational Qualification in Animal Care

NVQ Level 1

This course is very practical and will interest you if you enjoy working with animals and might be considering future employment in the animal industry. It does not include working with horses. You will learn about the daily care of animals including their feeding and accommodation. You will be able to develop your confidence in moving and handling a range of animals. The importance of Health and Safety and good working practices will be an essential part of the course. The full qualification includes the following units:

  • Assisting with the care of animals
  • Assisting with animal accommodation
  • Assisting with the movement and handling of animals
  • Assisting with animal feedstuff
  • Maintaining safe and effective working practices

This course is offered off-site at Oaklands College (Smallford campus).

City and Guilds Certificate in Basic Construction Skills

Level 1

This programme aims to give you an introduction to the construction industry and the various trades available for you to gain skills in. Over the course of your programme you will cover brickwork, plastering, carpentry and joinery, plumbing, painting and decorating, floor and wall tiling and electrical installation.

The course is assessed through a number of practical tasks set and assessed in the college. Job knowledge is assessed by Q & A, short answer papers, work packs and externally set multiple choice inline tests.

For this course students will need:

  • Have an interest in construction.
  • A level of physical fitness and willingness to learn the discipline of construction.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm.

Edexcel Certificate in Skills for Working Life (Engineering)

Entry Level

This qualification offers an introduction to the engineering industry.

Learners will study units in Introduction to Metalcraft and Health & Safety in the Work Place and during the course will learn to produce metal products, use the equipment and tools in the Metalcraft workshop safely an effectively, and recognise their success in this practical activity.

To achieve the Introduction to Metalcraft unit a learner must:

  • Identify metals and their uses in Metalcraft.
  • Use skills to make a Metalcraft product.
  • Discuss the skills they used.
  • Recognise three types of metals.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of Health & Safety in the Work Place.

NB. Safety shoes are a requirement for this course.

This course is half of a two year course, paired with Motor Vehicle Care and Maintenance.

Motor Vehicle Care & Maintenance

Entry Level

This unit introduces the learner to the skills needed to carry out simple routine maintenance of motor vehicles. It also further develops the learners skills needed to keep motor vehicles safe to use.

The aims of this unit are:

  • To introduce the learner to the possibility of a career in the motor vehicle industry.
  • To develop an interest in issues related to a variety of aspects of vehicles.
  • To understand health and safety while working in a vehicle-related workshop.
  • To develop basic practical skills necessary in a working environment.

To achieve this unit a learner must:

  • Understand the procedure for checking all fluid levels and prove that they are confident in exercising these operations.
  • Understand the various systems i.e. braking, lubrication, cooling, steering etc.
  • Understand the various special tools and their uses.
  • Understand the components of an engine and prove their ability by replacing them in a manner that is required by the syllabus.
  • Understand the many different aspects of the motor industry.
  • Understand various environmental issues, including world resources.

NB. Safety shoes are a requirement for this course.
