Mathematics - Key Stage 3

Mathematics – Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 Mathematics is studied across Years 7, 8 and 9. We introduce Key Stage 4 (GCSE) Mathematics during the Summer term of Year 9.

Students are initially set according to their results at Key Stage 2 and continue to be assessed throughout Key Stage 3 using levels from 1-8. For more information about the levels please click here:

Key Stage 3 is taught using a wide variety of resources and methods, with a strong emphasis on problem solving. Topics are often combined in order to help students gain a deeper understanding of Mathematics. At Townsend, the online tutorial system MyMaths is used for homework and revision purposes.

Mathematics - GCSE

Mathematics – GCSE Edexcel 1MA0

Mathematics in Year 11 is taught in six sets across each year group. A variety of resources are used in lessons including text books, IT, practical activities and past examination material. Students are encouraged to undertake independent study in addition to classwork and weekly homework.
All students at Townsend follow the Edexcel Linear A GCSE Mathematics course. The examination is offered at two tiers of entry; Higher tier covers grades A*-D, and Foundation tier grades C-G. Assessment consists of 2 exam papers; one calculator paper and one non-calculator paper. These are taken at the end of Year 11. There is no controlled assessment component to the Maths qualification. More information about the course can be found here:
