Modern Foreign Languages - Key Stage 3

All students begin in Year 7 with French as their first foreign language. Students are taught in mixed ability tutor groups for the whole year

Groupings are reviewed regularly, usually at the end of each term, with the possibility of movement between groups at that time.

In Years 8 and 9 students continue to learn French as their first language but also have the opportunity to learn an additional second language (German) in Year 9.

Resources:
French KS3 Expo 1/2/3 German KS3 Echo 1/2/3

We also make regular and extensive use of ICT packages and websites such as Boardworks and Linguascope. Students are also encouraged to access websites in their own time in order to practise language used in class.

Modern Foreign Languages - GCSE

In KS4 students may opt to continue with their study of one or both of the languages they learned in Key Stage 3, following the Edexcel GCSE full course.

Resources:
French KS4 Edexcel GCSE French (Foundation/Higher) 2FR01
German KS3 Edexcel GCSE German (Foundation/Higher) 2GN01

We also make regular and extensive use of ICT packages and websites such as Boardworks and Linguascope. Students are also encouraged to access websites in their own time in order to practise language used in class.

Requirements for taking the courses:

French and German are open to all pupils who have studied that language in Key Stage 3. It is not possible to start a new language in Year 10.

Taking two languages:

We hope that lots of pupils will continue with both the languages they study now, to take two languages GCSEs. Career wise, two languages are twice as useful as one! If you are considering a career where languages are of prime importance (in tourism, travel services, immigration, customs and excise, commerce - to mention a few), this is a very wise option. It is also worth remembering the high value given to qualifications in foreign languages by colleges and universities.

Further information is available from the teachers in charge of German and French.
