Martha Mills Young Writers Competition
Please see the information below about the Martha Mills Young Writers Competition.
In September 2021, 13-year-old Martha, a student of Dame Alice Owen’s, was involved in a cycling accident from which she should have easily recovered. Due to a number of medical misses, she did not. More recently you may have heard about the introduction of Martha’s Law which her parents have campaigned for since her death, determined that no one else should suffer the way that their family has.
The Martha Mills Young Writer’s Prize affords students aged 11-14 the opportunity to win one of three awards of £200, a selection of books and a special souvenir together with the opportunity to have their work published, and an all-expenses stay in London for the winners where the prizes will be awarded.
Competition details:
- Any piece of prose writing using the theme ‘A Secret.’
- 500 words or fewer.
- Entrants should send their entry as a Microsoft Word document including their full name, age at time of writing and a contact email for a parent / carer or teacher to: youngwriters@lrb.co.uk
- The closing date: 19th July 2024
This year, together with Martha’s parents, Philip Pullman will be judging the entries.
We all know the transformative and therapeutic power of writing for young people. It can provide them with the opportunity to consider the world around them – and their place in it – as well as opening up new worlds to explore. There are many keen young writers here at Townsend so we hope that students will enter. At this dark time for Martha’s family and friends, this is a small way of promoting positive possibilities for our young people.
