Sustainable Townsend Launch

September 26, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

We were created to be stewards of God’s creation through our work and Sustainable Townsend has been created to help students explore this calling and consider what they are able to do as part of it.

Genesis 1:28 is known as the cultural mandate. It is the original call to stewardship. It’s where God first calls humanity to cultivate and care for his creation using the unique gifts and talents he has endowed to every person.

Sustainability Super Curriculum

To compliment the academic subjects super curriculum, a sustainability one has also been launched for all year groups. Similar to the subject curriculum’s there is a read, do, watch and visit task. The Discovery Centre has stocked copies of the books, there are also audio versions of some of them to help students complete the tasks. Students can access the tasks and submit their evidence via the Sustainable Townsend Showbie, details of this and the class code are displayed on the display board on the PE corridor. Students will be rewarded for every section they complete, when all sections are complete they will be awarded with certification and a badge as sustainability ambassador.

Logo Competition

As we look forward to a new school year we are launching a new initiative for students across the school to get involved with and show that we are stewards of our planet and community. As Sustainable Townsend is launched it needs a logo to identify all the work and initiatives we embark on. I would like to invite all students to consider entering the logo competition. All students are welcome to enter, all entries will receive house points. A Showbie classroom has been set up for entries to be posted and the deadline is Friday October 3rd, students can find details of this on the display board in the PE corridor or on their form board display.

Photography Competition

As part of Sustainable Townsend and raising our awareness of our planet and how we can make a small difference and become better stewards; every half term a new creative competition will be launched. This half term it is a photography competition with the title “Our Amazing Planet”. All students in all year groups are welcome to enter, all entries will receive house points and the winning entries will be displayed on the board in the PE corridor and here in the newsletter for all to see. Entries can be posted on the Sustainable Townsend Showbie classroom and the deadline is Friday 24th October, students can find details of this on the display board in the PE corridor or on their form board display.

Allergy Awareness

September 26, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

At Townsend we want to make sure our students with allergies feel safe at school. So, we’re asking everyone in our school community to do their bit to become allergen aware.

At our school we have students with a range of allergies and are at risk of serious harm if they have an allergic reaction.  We ask that everyone does what they can to help us keep them safe.

How can you help?

Let us know if your child has an allergy

Talk to your child about allergies and the importance of:

Taking allergies seriously

Washing their hands before eating

Not sharing food with their friends

Being supportive of their friends who have allergies (being an allergy ally)

Learning about how to react if one of their friends has an allergic reaction.

Avoid giving food that contains allergens to your child to bring in to school

If you have any questions or concerns about allergies, please contact Mrs Ryan-Proudfoot on admin@townsend.herts.sch.uk

Thank you

PE Round Up

September 26, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

The last two weeks have seen the start of classes starting their new blocks of sport in PE, this includes sports such as netball, football, handball and basketball. On Thursday 18th September, Townsend hosted the District Cross Country races after school. All schools from the district came to compete in the event.

It was fantastic to see so many students from Townsend involved from Years 7 to 9.

There is one final cross-country event on Thursday 2nd October at Verulam School.

Students will be taken to and from the school by minibus. Parents/Carers can either collect from Verulam or from Townsend.

If your child would like to represent the school, please complete the form on Edulink so that we know they are planning on attending.

Senior Football vs KWS (friendly):

Another senior football fixture saw the team travel to KWS for what was labelled a “friendly” – though the game proved anything but, with both sides playing at full intensity in a fiercely competitive contest.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks on their home astro surface, catching our side cold in the opening stages. Within just 20 minutes, we found ourselves 3-0 down after two unstoppable long-range efforts into the top corner left goalkeeper James with no chance.

After a rallying half-time team talk, the seniors came out with renewed determination. Forward Theo struck twice in quick succession to drag us back into the game, before a driven Josh cross forced an own goal to level the pressure on KWS and swing the momentum in our favour.

Unfortunately, a stoppage for an injury allowed KWS to reset, and the home side restored their composure to add two further goals late on. Despite a spirited fightback and excellent work-rate throughout, the seniors eventually fell to a 6-3 defeat.

There were plenty of positives, not least the impressive performances from debutants Hezakiah and Temi (Year 11), as well as Year 13 newcomer Saeed. Special mention goes to Temi, who shone throughout and was fully deserving of the Player of the Match award.

Thank you to Mr Tominey and Mr Armstrong for taking the fixture.

Extra-Curricular Clubs:

We have many PE clubs running this year with a couple of new ones to look out for:

  • Monday afterschool – Year 11-13 Football

  • Tuesday Lunch time – Sports Talk at Townsend, an exciting new podcast

  • Friday Lunchtime – Badminton in the gym

Clubs that are still ongoing include KS3 football, Netball, Trampolining, Basketball, Swimming, etc. Check out the PE display board for more information.

Fixtures Next Week:

  • Monday 29th September: Year 9 County Cup Football Match vs St Michaels at Home

  • Monday 29th September: Year 10 Basketball vs Sir John Lawes

Keep up to date with team lists and fixture dates using the PE Fixtures Board.
