Beware scam text messages offering cost of living support
Please see the below message from Neighbourhood alert:
Scam SMS text messages have been received by people across the UK in recent weeks, claiming they are eligible for payments from a ‘Housing Support Fund’.
The message directs them to click on a link and pay a fee, then asks for bank details so that payments can be transferred to their account. Here is an example of one such message: “Cost of Living Allowance Issue Notice: The uk government is currently beginning to distribute this year is living allowance. Due to the suspension of the heating subsidy by the Parliament this winter, we will pay you this benefit in the form of living expenses allowance. Receiving this subsidy will not affect your other benefits and there is no need to pay any fees. After reading the information, please submit your application before October 23, 2024. We will transfer the 900 euros into 3 tranches into your account before November 1, 2024. ‘BOGUS LINK’ Thank you for your support to the UK Government”. These types of messages typically contain some tell-tale signs, such as poor grammar, spelling and other errors. Please look out for scam messages and be very sceptical of unsolicited texts, emails and social media messages that ask you to click on links. |
