On this day, French people mark the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, the end of the French monarchy and the establishment of the French republic. It is a national holiday in France and is celebrated with a military parade, firework displays and parties. Students had to represent the meaning of the day in their posters and of course include some French!
Congratulations to our worthy winners:

On Thursday 11th July, students in Year 8 and those studying GCSE French in Years 9 and 10 were able to experience French language theatre when the Onatti Theatre Company visited Townsend School and performed their French language play “Le Cours d’Art” (The Art Lesson), a comedy developed especially for secondary school pupils who are learning French.
The story is about five students who are attending an Art Club after school. They are given a task by the teacher who leaves them alone in the room. When one of them tries to leave, they realise the door has been locked from the outside. Unable to contact anyone, they are trapped in the room on the fourth floor!
The play was performed completely in French by French actors, but is very accessible due to the action and its interactive nature and there was much laughter. In the Languages department, we feel that experiencing the culture of a country is an essential part of developing your understanding and knowledge of a language and we hope students enjoyed this opportunity.
