Upcoming Arriva strikes

September 12, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

We have been made aware via social media that Arriva drivers intend to go on strike for a number of days.

This is of course of great concern to us and I am sure Arriva is working hard to try and avoid these strikes taking place. School will be open as usual and we hope all students will be able to make alternative arrangements in order to attend school. As the strike action may be cancelled at any point, parents / carers should inform us on each day of absence, providing us with the reason for the absence.

321 bus service to and from Luton

September 12, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

We have made good progress this week in our communication with Arriva regarding provision of bus services between school and Luton.

In the mornings, Arriva will now put on more double decker buses instead of singles at peak times. In the afternoons, Arriva will be providing a 321 Special Service, just for Townsend students, from the Texaco bus stop. It will wait for students 3:30-3:45 and students will be able to get straight on and not have to wait on the pavement. Please encourage your child to get this bus; if we don’t use it, we’ll lose it.

Thank you to the parents and carers who have also been in contact with Arriva. We’re moving together in the right direction.

PE Round-Up

September 12, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

This week saw all students in Year 7 to 9 compete in cross country races during their PE lessons. Students have performed well across their lessons this week and we look forward to the hard work continuing in their PE lessons moving forward.

Year 7 Mob Race:

Tuesday 9th September was the annual Year 7 Mob Race hosted by Sandringham School. Townsend took a team of 18 excited Year 7s to compete in the races and all performed fantastically. Our top performers from each race (of around 200 students per race) were Isla G who came 4th in the girl’s race and Javier B who finished 12th in the boy’s race.

There are three more upcoming District Cross Country events coming up:
Thursday 18th September at Townsend School
Thursday 25th September at Nicholas Breakspear
Thursday 2nd October at Verulam School

These competitions are open to all year groups, and we would love to have as many students as possible representing the school at each competition. If your child is interested in attending, please ask them to speak to any member of the PE department.

Senior Football:

A newly formed senior side made their first competitive appearance in the County Cup this week with a challenging opening fixture against SCC. Despite a promising performance and numerous chances created, the team were unable to find the finishing touches that might have changed the result.
The match began evenly, with both teams testing each other before a well-taken early goal from Theo O ensured the score was level at 1-1 going into half-time. After the break, SCC grew into the game and were more clinical in front of goal, eventually running out 4-1 winners, with a bit more luck the scoreline could’ve been reversed.
There were plenty of positives for the team to build on, with two Year 11 players making an impact at this higher level of competition. Archie B was named Player of the Match after an excellent individual display in goal. –Mr Tominey

Fixtures are in the process of being booked in for all year groups in Netball, Football and Basketball this term. Please speak to any member of the PE Department if you are interested in representing Townsend in any of these.

Less congestion near school- Please use Toulmin Drive

September 9, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

To keep our roads near school safe, please park 5 minutes away to drop off or pick up your children.

The playing fields car park on Toulmin Drive is a short walk from school, just please be mindful of the traffic flow around that car park so not to block anyone in.

Thank you.

Update on the 321 bus service to Luton

September 5, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

Following the changes to the bus service to and from Luton that took place on 31st August, we have been in regular communication with Arriva and have been monitoring the use of the bus stops.

With everyone back in school yesterday there were 75 students in total who got the bus from Harpenden Road, conveniently split over three buses and two bus stops.

This is our suggestion for future bus travel:

Year 7/8 – Use the bus stop opposite Texaco. There is a double decker that leaves at 1543, but has been arriving a few minutes earlier the last few days. There were about 20 students who used this bus yesterday.

Year 9+ – Use the bus stop opposite STAGS. There is a bus at 1540, which arrived at 1536 yesterday, or the 1555, which arrived at 1603 yesterday. About 55 students used this bus yesterday.

Of course any students may get either bus.

There are buses scheduled for every 15 minutes going to Luton. A supervisor from Arriva has been present the last few days to monitor bus use and they are going to try and provide double decker buses on these buses, as well as an earlier bus which picks up most of the STAGS students.

We have also sent a communication to Hertfordshire County Council requesting that the bus stop opposite Texaco be improved with a shelter, railings and better lighting. If you would like to add your voice, please contact them here

For any enquiries to Arriva, please use this form and use 321 as the route reference.

In the mornings, Arriva have asked that we inform students and parents/carers that there are three buses from the Interchange at 0700, 0715 and 0730. They have noted that a group of students is meeting at Starbucks at 7am and are then waiting to get the 0730 bus, which causes overcrowding. So Arriva have requested that students get buses at different times.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with school or Arriva. We will continue to monitor as the term progresses.

Kind regards,

Mrs H Line
Deputy Headteacher
