Careers in the racing industry

September 5, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

The British Racing School is a centre of excellence within horse racing and has been training young people to excel in the sport from their base in Newmarket, Cambridgeshire for over 40 years.

The racing school offers the following opportunities to young people:

  • A Foundation course for 16-24 year olds, an apprenticeship programme leading to a paid job in a racing yard (no riding experience necessary) – start dates throughout the year
  • A two-year non-residential course for 16-18 year olds which starts each September
  • A  Gap year programme for those finishing their A-Levels in Summer 2026, including a work placement in Australia

If your son or daughter would like more information please ask them to see me so that  can give them a booklet which contains further information.

Update on the 321 bus service to Luton

September 5, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

Following the changes to the bus service to and from Luton that took place on 31st August, we have been in regular communication with Arriva and have been monitoring the use of the bus stops.

With everyone back in school yesterday there were 75 students in total who got the bus from Harpenden Road, conveniently split over three buses and two bus stops.

This is our suggestion for future bus travel:

Year 7/8 – Use the bus stop opposite Texaco. There is a double decker that leaves at 1543, but has been arriving a few minutes earlier the last few days. There were about 20 students who used this bus yesterday.

Year 9+ – Use the bus stop opposite STAGS. There is a bus at 1540, which arrived at 1536 yesterday, or the 1555, which arrived at 1603 yesterday. About 55 students used this bus yesterday.

Of course any students may get either bus.

There are buses scheduled for every 15 minutes going to Luton. A supervisor from Arriva has been present the last few days to monitor bus use and they are going to try and provide double decker buses on these buses, as well as an earlier bus which picks up most of the STAGS students.

We have also sent a communication to Hertfordshire County Council requesting that the bus stop opposite Texaco be improved with a shelter, railings and better lighting. If you would like to add your voice, please contact them here

For any enquiries to Arriva, please use this form and use 321 as the route reference.

In the mornings, Arriva have asked that we inform students and parents/carers that there are three buses from the Interchange at 0700, 0715 and 0730. They have noted that a group of students is meeting at Starbucks at 7am and are then waiting to get the 0730 bus, which causes overcrowding. So Arriva have requested that students get buses at different times.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with school or Arriva. We will continue to monitor as the term progresses.

Kind regards,

Mrs H Line
Deputy Headteacher

Bookopoly Success

July 23, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

This year we have seen lots of reading successes from our Year 7s and 8s.  Many of these students have taken up and participated in our Bookoploly reading challenge.

We have been very impressed with their efforts and how much they have achieved.

A handful of students have worked especially hard to read around the board with Oreoluwa F completing Bookopoly, having read all of the 40 books set out,  Henry R and George S finishing on 19 books, and Xavion C made it all the way to 18.  Not only have they all earned themselves lots of achievement points along the way, but they also all received a certificate of merit and a token for our book vending machine, as part of our end of year celebration assemblies.

Huge congratulations to them all!

Year 7 Bastille Day poster Competition winners

July 11, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

We recently ran a poster competition for all students in Year 7 in celebration of Bastille Day (called the Fête nationale in France) which takes place every year on 14th July and is France’s national day.

On this day, French people mark the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, the end of the French monarchy and the establishment of the French republic. It is a national holiday in France and is celebrated with a military parade, firework displays and parties. Students had to represent the meaning of the day in their posters and of course include some French!

Congratulations to our worthy winners!
