British Science Week Competition

March 7, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

We are excited to announce an engaging opportunity for our students to participate in this year’s British Science Week Poster Competition!

This competition encourages students to explore the theme of air quality by designing innovative solutions to improve the air we breathe in indoor public spaces.

About the competition

Students are invited to select an indoor public space they frequent, such as a classroom, library, café, or cinema, and consider whether the air in that space is healthy and clean. They will then develop an idea or invention to enhance air quality in their chosen space. This could be a completely new concept or a creative re-imagining of existing solutions, such as ventilation systems, air filters, or other technologies.

Participants should:

  • Conduct research using trustworthy sources.
  • Apply scientific understanding from their lessons (e.g., states of matter, virus behaviour).
  • Present their ideas clearly and creatively through diagrams, instructions, or posters.
  • Submission Guidelines
  • Posters must be A4 or A3 in size.
  • Entries should include photos, graphs, or visuals to effectively communicate ideas.
  • Once completed, entries will be photographed and submitted online for judging.
  • Each school may submit the top five entries.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 28th March, so please encourage your child to start brainstorming and designing soon! For more details and competition rules, visit the British Science Week website.

This is a wonderful chance for our students to showcase their creativity and scientific thinking while addressing an important global issue. We look forward to seeing their innovative ideas!

Best regards,

Mr Zafar
Science Teacher

Missing Ties

March 7, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

Please make sure that if your child borrows a tie from the school office, that they return it after each day. We are currently running low on borrowed ties.

Thank you,

Ash Wednesday Cathedral Service

February 28, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

Cathedral Service – Wednesday 5th March

As we are visiting the cathedral for our Ash Wednesday service next week, please ensure your child knows how they are getting home directly from the abbey at 3pm. Barnetts and Motts buses will be collecting students from the Cathedral and taking them home as usual.

Parents and carers are welcome to attend the service starting at 2pm, just email admin@townsend.herts.sch.uk to reserve your seat(s). We will be having a monetary collection during the service to donate to St Albans Action for Homeless (STAHH), adding to the £400+ we have already raised for them. To give in a more practical way, students are being asked to bring in items in form groups for a ‘care bag’. Each ‘care bag’ will be given to the 25 people, whom STAAH are currently supporting in St Albans.

Thank you for all your support!

Mrs Line
Deputy Headteacher

Recent Ski Trip

February 28, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

Ski Trip to Bardonecchia – A Fantastic Experience!

From Saturday 15th February to Sunday 23rd February, 42 students took part in an unforgettable ski trip to Bardonecchia, Italy. We were lucky to have fantastic weather throughout, and although the slopes were icy at times, the students rose to the challenge, developing their skiing skills with determination and enthusiasm. Whether complete beginners or experienced skiers, everyone made noticeable progress, showing resilience and a willingness to push themselves outside their comfort zones.

Beyond the slopes, students had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of après-ski activities. The highlight of the trip was the exhilarating alpine coaster, where students raced down the mountain at thrilling speeds, making for an unforgettable experience. They also enjoyed a swim and spa evening, explored the town, and rounded off the week with a pizza night enjoying authentic Italian cuisine.

Throughout the trip, the students were a credit to the school, demonstrating our values of Respect for All, Achievement for All in everything they did. Their teamwork, positive attitude, and willingness to support one another made this experience truly special.

A huge thank you to Mr Hill, Miss Jones, Miss Philpott, Mr Armstrong, Miss Stanley, and Mr Rayat for giving up their half-term to make this trip possible. Their dedication and support played a key role in ensuring its success.

For those inspired by this experience, keep an eye out—there will be another opportunity to go on a ski trip in 2027!

Careers Survey- Please complete

February 25, 2025/in General News/by Isabelle Stuckey

Careers Survey

In partnership with our local Careers Hub our school is participating in the annual Hertfordshire Parent/Carer Apprenticeships and Technical Education Pathways Survey. It doesn’t matter whether you have strong views or have little knowledge of apprenticeships to be able to complete this survey. Some of you may have completed previous years surveys – some questions have been added or slightly amended since last year.

All completed surveys are completely anonymous, and responses will be collated directly by Amazing Apprenticeships who have been commissioned to complete the survey across Hertfordshire. If we receive more than 50 responses our school will receive its own individual report which will be incredibly helpful for us in planning future careers activity for both students and parent/carers.

Please click on the link below to complete the survey.
