Course Description
This A Level course begins with an introduction covering sketchbook use, drawing skills and material development. The course also includes a written element at A2 level.
Programme of Study
Year 12
In Year 12, students will develop fundamental skills across different media, study a range of artists, designers and craftspeople and complete shorter projects exploring different themes and techniques. Students will also begin building their portfolio of work, start developing their personal artistic style and learn how to analyse and respond to artists’ work. They will also begin work on their Personal Investigation.
Year 13
In Year 13, students will complete their Personal Investigation (coursework). They will develop greater independence in their work and refine their technical skills and personal style. Students will also prepare for and complete their Externally Set Assignment, curate and present their final exhibition and complete a written element (1,000-3,000 words).
Assessment
The A Level Art and Design is assessed through two components:
Personal Investigation (60% of A Level)
This is a practical portfolio and related study, based on an idea, issue, concept or theme developed by the student.
Students will produce a substantial portfolio of practical work showing their personal response to a theme or starting point of their choice. They will start this portfolio in Year 12 and submit it at the end of Year 13.
There will also be a written element of 1,000-3,000 words supporting the student’s practical work.
Externally Set Assignment (40% of A Level)
This is a practical exam responding to a stimulus paper provided by the AQA released on 1st February of Year 13.
Students will produce a preparatory work completed during the preparation period. The final outcome(s) will be produced during a 15-hour supervised time.
